Fujitec to Install 1st Escalator with Sleep Mode In U.S! - 12/29/2004
Today, the first of 12 escalators for the Herald Square project is being shipped to New York. This ground breaking project marks the first installation of escalators equipped with Sleep Mode in the United States.
Sleep Mode is an innovative feature that slows down the escalator after a predetermined period of non-use. For example, an escalator can be set to decrease from 90 fpm to 15 fpm after 10 minutes without a passenger. Sensors located at the escalator’s entrance notify the controller when a new passenger is approaching and thus resumes the escalator to its normal speed. As a result, Sleep Mode saves energy, decreases wear and extends the overall life of the escalator.
Fujitec’s innovative Sleep Mode is supported by state-of-the-art VVVF technology and meets all of New York City’s transit code requirements.
Herald Square was named after the New York Herald newspaper who’s headquarters were located on the square from 1894 to 1921. Today, Herald Square is surrounded by some of New York’s premier shopping and tourist attractions, including the world famous Macy’s on 34th Street, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden and the newly renovated Manhattan Mall.
Due to the high shopping traffic of this station, demolition of the existing escalators is expected to begin after the holiday season. The installation of the twelve new escalators will be carried out in three phases, carefully planned so as to minimize interruptions in passenger flow.
